Prime Lens are those which have a fixed focal length and Zoom Lens are the ones that are able to adjust their focal length. Most People tend to use zoom lens as they are more versatile and are suitable in most situations. But Prime lenses are mostly used by professionals to do incredibly precise shots.

The Advantage of Prime lens are numerous .

To start they are cheaper than  zoom lens as they are more easy to build than zoom lens.It has a simple construction unlike the zoom lens . The prime lens are also used to get extremely precise shots . Prime lens tend to have a smaller aperture than zoom lens enabling images and videos to have a shallow depth of field. This allows the photographer to make the viewer focus to whichever subject he wants . Also Prime lens tend to have faster auto focusing than zoom lenses which is useful is some situations.

The Advantages of zoom lens.

Zoom Lenses are the lenses that come on default with some cameras. Zoom lenses since it can adjust its focal length are more sutitable in real life situations . For example if you want to take a close up image of a building and its not practical to go near it , zoom lens can be useful. Zoom Lenses tend to have larger aperture than prime lens , so they don't have a shallow depth of field as much as the prime lens but its still considerable. Zoom lens are more costly as well as more heavy than prime lenses.
